Shakespeare & Co. Bids Farewell to Two NYC Locations Amid Rising Costs
Beloved independent bookseller Shakespeare & Co. has shuttered two of its three remaining New York City locations, citing financial challenges that have made it difficult to keep operations afloat.
The first closure, at West 105th Street and Broadway, came just a year after the store’s opening, while the second, at 939 Lexington Avenue, marked the end of over 20 years serving the Upper East Side community and functioning as Hunter College’s official bookstore and merchandiser.
Co-owner Dane Neller told West Side Rag that despite strong community support, the stores struggled to reach the sales levels needed for long-term sustainability. The rising cost of rent, labor, and operational expenses ultimately made it impossible to continue.
“The Lexington Avenue store’s lease was up, and with a rent increase looming, we had to make a tough decision,” Neller said. The loss of revenue from that store further impacted the viability of the West 105th Street location.
However, it’s not all sad news. Shakespeare & Co.’s Lincoln Square location at 68th Street remains open and thriving. As bookstores continue to navigate the challenges of a shifting retail landscape, readers can still support Shakespeare & Co. at its remaining NYC outpost.
