Empowering Rural Libraries: Penguin Random House and United for Libraries Launch New Grant Program

Penguin Random House has partnered with United for Libraries to create a grant program aimed at supporting rural and small libraries across the United States.

Penguin Random House has partnered with United for Libraries to create a grant program aimed at supporting rural and small libraries across the United States. With $25,000 in total funding, the initiative will provide $500 and $1,000 grants to Friends of Library groups—organizations dedicated to raising money and advocating for local libraries. Additionally, 20 libraries will receive $500 in-kind book grants for Penguin Random House titles.

This program underscores the crucial role small libraries play in their communities, particularly during a time when access to books and the freedom to read face increasing challenges.

“Small and rural libraries are community cornerstones, but today—when the freedom to read is under attack across the country—they are more important than ever,” said Skip Dye, senior vice president of library sales and digital strategy at Penguin Random House. “These grants will empower Friends’ groups to bolster their support and advocacy, ensuring these vital community centers not only survive but thrive.”

How to Apply

Applications for the grant program will open February 3, 2025, and close on February 17, 2025. Selected recipients will be announced on March 10, 2025. Eligible libraries must serve populations of 25,000 or fewer and be located outside urban areas, as defined by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Libraries without existing Friends groups are also eligible if they are in the process of forming one.
