Changes at Algonquin: Gleick to Exit as Little, Brown Rebuilds

Big changes are happening over at Algonquin Books as the imprint transitions under Little, Brown’s umbrella. After three years of waiting since Hachette Book Group (HBG) acquired Workman Publishing (Algonquin’s parent company), restructuring is now in full swing.

Sally Kim, president of Little, Brown, just announced that longtime Algonquin publisher Betsy Gleick will be leaving on October 4. Gleick isn’t the only one saying goodbye—associate publisher Michael McKenzie and other Algonquin staff will also be stepping down. This signals that Little, Brown has some fresh ideas in the works for the beloved imprint.

According to Kim, Algonquin will continue its mission of amplifying new and undiscovered voices but with a new strategy to better fit today’s publishing scene. The world of books is constantly changing, especially with new ways for readers to discover stories. Kim hinted that there will be more updates in the coming weeks and months, including new senior editorial leadership to drive the next chapter for Algonquin.

What’s Next for Algonquin? Kim has made it clear that they’re focused on building upon Algonquin’s long legacy of high-quality storytelling while adapting to new market opportunities. With the departure of key leaders like Gleick, it seems Little, Brown is gearing up to make some bold changes, though what that looks like exactly is still under wraps.

The acquisition of Workman Publishing by HBG happened in 2021, but changes were on hold due to a three-year standstill period. Now, the dust is settling, and Little, Brown is stepping in to reshape the imprint’s future.

Why This Matters This isn’t just about leadership changes—it’s about redefining what Algonquin stands for in a publishing world that’s rapidly evolving. Kim’s focus is on taking advantage of new opportunities for connecting with readers and supporting unique voices. As one of the go-to imprints for literary excellence, Algonquin’s future under Little, Brown promises some exciting possibilities for both readers and authors.

Keep an eye out for more news as Kim and her team roll out plans in the coming months.
