Authors Guild Joins Forces with Created by Humans to Protect Writers’ Rights in the AI Era
The Authors Guild has announced a partnership with AI rights licensing platform Created by Humans, aiming to protect authors’ interests in the age of artificial intelligence. This collaboration will involve promoting the platform, which allows authors to license their works for AI usage, and helping to shape policies that best serve the writing community. Authors Guild CEO Mary Rasenberger will sit on Created by Humans’ advisory board, working alongside the company to develop webinars and educational materials that will clarify licensing terms and fees for authors.
Rasenberger emphasized that the platform has made strides in addressing the specific needs of authors with trade books, especially as questions about who controls AI rights in traditional publishing contracts remain unresolved. Created by Humans now appears well-prepared to offer a transparent, author-centered approach, placing the needs of writers at the forefront.
Former Authors Guild president Douglas Preston is not only supporting the initiative but has invested in Created by Humans and plans to license his own books through the platform. Recently, the company also brought on Mark Bryant, a former editor at large for Scribd Originals, to lead author and agent relations.
The Authors Guild has also launched a “human authored” badge, which authors can use on their book covers to showcase works created without AI involvement. This badge is part of a broader effort to help authors assert their creative agency and differentiate their work in a rapidly changing publishing landscape.
With this partnership, the Authors Guild hopes to provide authors with more control over how their works are used in the AI space, ensuring fair compensation and clarity in an area that’s still evolving.
