Spotlight on Changeling Press: Kate Hill
Meet Kate Hill
Always a fan of romance and the paranormal, I started writing over twenty years ago. My first story was accepted for publication in 1996. Since then I’ve written over one hundred short stories, novellas and novels. I love to blend genres. I also love horror and a happily ever after, so if you’re looking for romance with witches, aliens, vampires, angels, demons, shapeshifters, and more, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to your taste here.
When I’m not writing, I enjoy reading, watching horror and action movies, working out, and spending time with my family and pets.
An Interview with Holly Hewson at TRS
HH: What inspired you to start writing and how did your journey with Changeling Press begin?
Kate: Writing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I first started writing for Changeling because I liked the people. Margaret and her crew are truly interested in bringing readers and writers together while treating everyone with kindness and respect. Not all people in this or any business are like that, so to me, that’s a giant plus.
HH: Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you go from an initial idea to a finished manuscript?
Kate: For me, the characters usually come first. They sort of “talk” to me, and from there I form a loose outline. I’m sort of a hybrid plotter/pantser. I need to outline where I’m going, but I want lots of wiggle room for inevitable changes.
HH: How do you develop your characters? Do you draw inspiration from real-life experiences or pure imagination?
Kate: One of the best ways for me to get to know my characters is to pretend they’re with me throughout the day. I like to think about how they act in everyday life and let them reveal themselves to me in that way.
HH: Of all the books you’ve written for Changeling Press, which one is your favorite and why?
Kate: That’s a really hard question to answer. I feel close to my characters and can’t really pick a favorite. Two series I’ve really loved working on are the Blood and Soul books and also the books set in the Pandemonium universe. I’ve continued Pandemonium with my indie-published books, as well.
HH: What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your writing career and how did you overcome them?
Kate: Lately for me the biggest challenge is finding the time to keep on a schedule so that I can release books as well as work on the stories I want to tell. Marketing is and always has been a huge challenge for me.
HH: Can you share a memorable experience or feedback from a reader that particularly touched or surprised you?
Kate: Initially, I was surprised by how many people liked Zigor, the hero in my first Blood and Soul story. He was always one of my “problem children,” but he somehow really connected with my readers. I’ve always been happy about that!
HH: Changeling Press is known for its diverse genres. Is there a genre you haven’t written in yet but are curious to explore?
Kate: Recently I’ve been working on horror stories. I’m a huge fan of horror and have always wanted to write more in that genre.
HH: Do you have any unique writing rituals or habits that help you stay focused and creative?
Kate: Nothing specific. I try to stay on a schedule, which is the most important thing for getting the job done.
HH: What advice would you give to aspiring authors who dream of being published by Changeling Press?
Kate: I’d encourage them to go for it! They’re great people to work with if you write erotica or erotic romance.
HH: How do you see the future of digital publishing evolving, and what role do you think Changeling Press will play in it?
Kate: Changeling is still standing after lots of earlier publishers have either gracefully or some not-so-gracefully disappeared. I hope they have continued success and remain part of the publishing world no matter where the future takes it!
