By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance StudioHH: Leigh, welcome back to TRS. Please tell us about your featured story, Two for the Money. LW: Two for the Money is my first ménage. I'd always thought I didn't have one in me to write, but it turns out I was wrong!
HH: Poor Melissa. Having to choose between two gorgeous men who both want her intensely. Or does she have to choose? Where did you get the idea for this sizzling story? LW: The idea came to me like all my ideas tend to come - late one night as I was lying in bed, trying to sleep. In my mind, I saw three people at dinner - they were at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere which I'd been to once. I hadn't even thought of that place in years. I watched as the woman received an award for best salesperson of the month and suddenly the room expanded to include a large amount of people and I realized it was a work dinner. I watched her flirt with the men on either side of her and figured out from what the men said to one another that they were close friends but each wanted the woman between them. Then they all three walked out of the restaurant, bantering as they did, and climbed into an SUV. And the woman thought to herself, "I wish I didn't have to choose between them. I want them both." And that's how it started...
HH: What do you like best about Roger? LW: Well, Roger is a very complex guy. He's serious and a little nerdy, and while he isn't as good looking as Dean, he has a depth to him that attracts Melissa.
HH: What do you like best about Dean? LW: He's funny and outrageous. And, um, drop dead hot.
HH: " Would you make the same choice as Melissa? <g> LW: Most likely not <g>. I'm pretty conservative. I didn't really know this side of me existed until I started writing. I guess I've always had a sexual part of me. But I'm a vanilla, one-man kind of gal. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading ménages - I *really* do (hehe!) - but in real life, I'm not that adventuresome. I can only imagine how sticky the dynamics of a ménage would be. Plus as much as I love my husband, the thought of picking up after TWO men leaves me screaming in terror LOL!
HH: What are you working on at the moment? LW: I've just finished up galleys for my next two releases - SECRET OBSESSION (which releases on February 4th) and HOT VISIONS (an expanded re-release, on January 8th). Then I'm writing something new. I've already begun plotting and I'm so excited to jump in and begin!
HH: What do you have in store for readers in 2008? LW: 2008 will be a crazy year. With HOT VISIONS coming out on Jan 8th, SECRET OBSESSION on Feb 4th, IN HEAT on April 4th, IN ICE on June 6th, and TAMING RED DRAGON on September 16th, my readers have a lot to choose from this upcoming year!
HH: How has the romance genre changed since you started writing? LW: I started writing in 2002 (I just hit my five year mark!). When I wrote my first book, which opened with a sex scene, I was told there was no way I could publish it as a romance. Ellora's Cave and Liquid Silver (and a couple others that are now gone) had just started and I submitted the book to LSB on the advice of a friend. From that point forward, I wrote spicy paranormal romance! Although lately I've tried my hand at new things. SECRET OBSESSION is a straight contemporary red hot and TAMING RED DRAGON is a fantasy romance.
HH: What goals do you have for yourself at this point in your career? LW: I'm constantly looking to sell to bigger markets and reach more readers. But after a bad back injury made writing impossible for all of 2006, I'm just trying to write at this point. It's hard to understand if you haven't been there, but even if you're struggling to finish a story that isn't going well, writing is so much better than not writing.
HH: How do you keep the stories fresh and exciting for yourself? LW: After a stale period where I kept trying to write what my agent told me would sell, I realize that the only way to keep stories fresh and exciting for me is to write what I love, and try to forget anyone else's demands but the characters in my head. This is harder said than done and sometimes I get that "oh god, here we go again -- another story that won't sell" feeling. Although my stories do sell - eventually. I think most writers are worriers by nature and having a strong imagination can often get you in trouble when you start thinking about the future. But in the end, I would never trade this career for any other. This is what I was born to do!
