An Interview with Samantha Gail
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: Samantha, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, She Who Dares, Wins. SG: Greetings Holly and thank you for inviting me back to play. She Who Dares, Wins is an action-packed, spy thriller romance. The heroine is a field agent tasked with gathering HUMINT (Human Intelligence) in a country where women are basically second class citizens. Not only is her assignment difficult just by the nature of the information needed, but she's further hampered by a suspicious bodyguard. He's a gorgeous Aussie bodyguard who's been sent to protect a young prince - the same young prince who happens to be providing Isabelle's "cover story" as an English language tutor.
HH: Your heroine is an agent sent by the NSA to gather evidence of an experiment gone horribly wrong. She's at risk of being tripped up by a gorgeous bodyguard. Where did you get the idea for their sizzling story? SG: The idea sprang from a previous book I had written. Quinton and Isabelle were minor players in Guarding the Coast but they begged for their own story!
I gravitate toward strong heroines and have always been intrigued by the National Security Agency. The NSA is an entity that doesn't get a lot of positive public recognition, yet what they do is of vital importance. In She Who Dares, Wins, Isabelle is tasked with what turns into an impossible assignment. Quinton is the only person she can ask for help.
HH: What do you like best about Isabelle and how do you identify with her? SG: She's smart, savvy, extremely capable, and has never lost the element of human compassion that makes her more than just a highly-trained robot. I can relate to everything about her. =)
HH: What do you like best about Quinton and why is he more than a match for her? SG: Quinton is a "true grit" kind of man. He has worked hard all his life, singlehandedly raising his little brothers, eventually joining the Australian Special Air Service Regiment. He's the quintessential hero…strong, wise, and mouth-watering gorgeous. He and Isabelle are formidable when working in tandem.
HH: What sort of research went into this work? SG: Lots of reading, coupled with a friend who was willing to speak with me about a certain place in Ft. Meade where he used to work =)
HH: What are you working on now? SG: I am almost finished with the last installment of my sci-fi romance FORESTAL series. Amanda Saurgin has been given command of her own warship - Glory…a prototype fraught with a multitude of problems that only Amanda's old nemesis can solve.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? SG: Some of my readers have asked that I write a sequel to Savior in Time and I'm seriously considering it. Time travel romance really appeals to me…always has. I've also been asked to collaborate on a paranormal story that should be great fun.
HH: How much time do you devote to your writing career between writing, promotions, appearances…? SA: Oooh, that's a hard one. I tend to jot down a lot of notes and then set aside extended, quality time each week to put them down in a coherent form. For me, writing comes from a quiet place inside. I don't force myself to write something each and every day, nor do I give myself a daily "word count" goal.
As far as promotions and appearances go, I live in a very rural part of Alaska. No bookstores, no malls, not even a movie theater. By necessity, the marketing aspects of being a writer are done via the internet. At least once a year, my husband and I get down to the "lower 48" for a convention or conference - usually the RT since I'm one of the Faery Court sponsors and it's always so much fun.
HH: What do you enjoy reading? SG: Just about anything that is well written. Right now, I'm totally hooked on Meg Gardiner's stories featuring a forensic psychiatrist. I stayed up all night reading The Dirty Secrets Club. Couldn't put it down! Should have started reading earlier in the day! The Memory Collector is out now and just came in the mail. Woohoo!
HH: What are you doing this summer? SG: Summer is a fantastic time to be outdoors in Alaska. There are a million things to do. So, if I'm not busy at the clinic, you'll find me hiking, fishing, tending plants in the greenhouse and exploring all the nearby islands via kayak or canoe.
HH: Thank you!
