An Interview with Marie Treanor
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Marie, welcome back to TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Killing Joe.

MT: Thanks, Holly – it’s lovely to be back!

Killing Joe is all about a hired assassin who’s sent to Scotland to murder crash researcher Anna Baird. Only, before he can kill her he’s involved in a car accident and wakes up in one of Anna’s crash tests. Anna can’t understand how her favourite crash test dummy comes to be haunted by the exciting stranger - with whom she quickly falls in love - but she’ll do anything to help him. The trouble is, he keeps ending up in another crash test and dying yet again…. .

HH: I love the concept of this story. <g> Where did you get the idea for it?

MT: I don’t really know! I think it was triggered by some silly tv advert, and then the whole story just began to form in my head. I knew it was weird, but I had to write it anyway, and it seems to have worked, because Samhain bought it immediately =) It’s my first book with this publisher.

HH: What do you like best about Joe?

MT: Hmm…I think that he’s this really hard, tough, seemingly invulnerable man who’s committed murder without compunction, and yet the good guy’s still in there, locked up with all his vulnerabilities. After his accident, he never rages against his terrible fate – he believes he deserves it, even appreciates the perverse humour of it. From an appalling childhood on the streets of Rio, he’s chosen his own path and is prepared to take the consequences, in this life and the next. But you still get the feeling that if Joe’s on your side, you’re completely safe.

HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this work?

MT: I love imagining how people might deal with a supposedly impossible situation! And in this case they’re such completely different people that it was great fun, especially letting their relationship grow through these impossible events. They have to struggle to see themselves through each others’ eyes. Anna is brilliant but work-obsessed, and thinks she’s dull to the opposite sex, while to her Joe is this devastatingly attractive and exciting stranger with the mysterious past. Joe believes he’s beneath Anna and can only bring her danger and pain. He’s never met anyone like her: the people he knows are violent or corrupt - or both – while Anna’s whole life is about helping others. He expects her to feel insulted by his touch and is almost baffled when she shows she can’t get enough of him!

HH: So what else can readers look forward to from you?

MT: Lots of exciting stuff, actually! Just before Killing Joe is released with Samhain (on 29th April), I have Willow the Wisp coming out with Changeling Press on the 25th! This is one of the opening stories in a fabulous new multi-author series called Big, Beautiful and Wild! – all about alien tree-shifters and the big humans who love them. Mine is set in Romania, where local architect Cristian decides to cut down the trees on his land to make way for luxury holiday cottages – only the willow at the bottom of Cristian’s garden can save the young shifters, and she’s been in love with Cristian all her life. I had great fun with this =)

Then in June comes Book 2 of Rogue Warriors: Soldier, again with Changeling, and in July, Gothic Dragon, my second with Samhain Publishing.

HH: Tell us about your current writing schedule.

MT: It’s a bit hectic and disorganized – I’ve got loads of ideas but finding the time to write them isn’t easy! Sometimes I can get up early and write while the house is quiet, but usually I write fort two hours in the afternoon when my daughter is at Nursery. She goes to school in August though, so I’m looking forward to more writing time then.

HH: How do you balance a writing career with family and everything else?

MT: Badly =) I can’t ignore the children too much – they won’t let me! - so it’s my poor untidy house that suffers most.

HH: What do you do when you get stuck in a story?

MT: If I can’t get unstuck in a couple of days, I leave it alone. I usually go back to it in the end though – sometimes months or even years later! - when it suddenly comes to me how to make it right.

HH: How do you celebrate a new sale or good news in your writing?

MT: I smile a lot =) And in the evening, share a nice bottle of wine with my husband.

HH: Any holiday plans this year?

MT: Ooh, lots! By the time this feature comes out, I’ll be up in the Turkish hills in the sunshine =) And in the summer we’ve got a beautiful break in Malta planned – LOTS of sun and peace and beautiful places to visit. I’m really looking forward to both holidays!

Thanks for having me at TRS =)

HH: Thank you!
