| Tahnee Madison, at 30 years old, seemed to be fighting a battle from which she would never become the winner. Owner of “Tahnee’s Coffee House, she had a lot of friends who loved her deeply and stood by her side. Her biggest problem was her critical sister, Topaz, who looked like everything Tahnee did not. Topaz looked like a model and had stolen Tahnee’s fiancé, Jaron; she constantly reminded Tahnee that she was short, fat, and ugly and could not keep a man. Now, it was the beginning of the weekend for her older brother, Tyrell’s, wedding, and at the bus stop, she confided in her friends that she desperately needed a date! She was overheard by a gorgeous man, Jake, awaiting the same bus.
During his lunch hour, Jake, a welder on a new project, walked around the area and went into the coffee house and spotted Tahnee. He remembered the conversation of that morning, and continued to listen to her predicament. That night, since her family was expecting her to have a date, when they all gathered at the coffee shop before going to dinner as a wedding party/family, Tahnee knew she would have to confess to her lie. It was at this point that Jake came in, dressed in a suit and walked up to her (while she was being belittled again by her sister), kissed her and apologized for being late. She recognized him, but did not know his name. Thus began the weekend of her dreams! Ms. Aliyah Burke has written a fast-paced, quirky story which, even though a little hard to believe, shows that dreams can come true. Her characters are loveable and believable; she presented people from opposite ends of the spectrum—those who are loving and available as well as those who only feel validated if tearing down someone else’s character. I could totally relate to this story and read it in one sitting. It was great and, even though the main couple was from different races, it worked! I highly recommend this and commend the author for her remarkable book.
