Detective Shoni Alexander is a good cop, but one that has been through some emotional issues to the point where her ability to do her job is in question. She meets John, a homeless amnesiac, and together they realize the arson cases she's currently working on are tied to his amnesia. As they begin to put the bits of evidence together, they also grow closer together. But the arsonist doesn’t plan on letting them live long enough to solve the case.

This book was hard to put down. From the very beginning, the reader was drawn into Shoni’s grief over losing her mother, and how that grief was shaping how she lived her life. Meeting John and getting to know him was the catalyst that propelled her out of her grief. John had all the qualities of a great hero with the instinct to protect those weaker and the ability to protect himself. The secondary characters added dimension to the personalities of both Shoni and John. The case moved the plot along at a quick pace and the reader is swept along trying to figure out the ending while at the same time enjoying the dynamics between the characters. Where There’s Fire is an apt title for the case as well as the romance between Shoni and John. This was my first book by Maureen McKade and I recommend it and will look for more by this talented author.
