A virus that struck years before and changed the world has left the humans pitted against "The Impaired." The Impaired are affected humans now better suited to controlling everything. Danielle Goodman has trained at the Warder Academy and is now the very best at her job. Danielle remembers seeing her stepfather feed upon her mother in a vampire's blood haze after being infected, and now she eats and breathes the Warder codes and knows it's up to the Warders to protect humans from those infected with supernatural powers. Only her first real assignment isn't as a vampire hunter; it's to be a lowly werewolf herder for a scientist, an impaired scientist who may have the tools to reversing the virus.

Dr. Carl Harriman was infected, and his form of impairment has transformed him into a werewolf. He wants to create a cure that will help people return to normal and become less superhuman and more human. Luckily, the government wants the same thing.

Can a cure be found? Or will Carl and Danielle find more than they bargained for?

This is a wonderful mix of real life politics, paranormal aspects and true-to-life characters in spite of their 'impairments'. The economy has been depleted and things are not as they were before the impairment; of course this can all be blamed on the fight to keep the impaired from destroying normal human citizens. After all, fairies, elves, gnomes, werewolves and vampires should never be allowed to exist in a normal world.

Carl is more than just a great scientist; he is capable of changing peoples' lives by doing more than just creating a cure. He is strong and confident and knows that he can accomplish great things. His growing attraction to his herder cannot change his path, but it could change hers. Danielle has been trained since she was a young girl to accept only what she was taught at the Warder's Academy, but even as deep as her training was, she's only truly loyal to Joe Smealy, her mentor and savior after the death of her stepfather. Carl entices her to be strong and she tries to ignore it but even while giving in she still holds true to her beliefs. Carl and Danielle add to the vast variety of characters such as Mike the Vampire, who is more than just a bloodsucking fiend.

Mr. Preece created a world that, despite the technological advancements of its citizens, still suffers from everyday societal elements. Prejudice and fear can infect everyone, but so can extreme power in the wrong hands. Sometimes it just takes one talented scientist to change the status quo, and sometimes it takes an impaired human to demonstrate humanity. Add in lots of plot twists, action and intrigue and you have a winner.

Definitely a must read!
