| Terrorists have taken over Manhattan. Second Lieutenant Tomas Tait and four other soldiers have been killed or captured when sent out on a recon mission across the Brooklyn bridge by the irresponsible Lieutenant Rosser. Taking his life and his career in his hands Captain Jace Rickert goes AWOL to find and bring his lover back.
J.M. Snyder has really taken the bull by the horns in some ways with this book. Her main characters, Jace and Tomas, are military men who are in love. Jace is a gifted pilot who’s been grounded after an accident. He’s obviously won a lot of respect throughout his career for his skills. Enough respect that his best friend Captain Alden Romero is willing to risk discipline, possibly court martial for helping Jace get to the battlefront to find his lover. Depending on the readers’ view as you read this could be taken as an excellent love story or as an anti military story of men throwing their responsibility to the wind in the midst of war. Is Jace really in love or is he just obsessed to the point of throwing caution to the wind? In many ways the conclusions are left to the reader. All in all, this is a well written love story. The characters are strong, loyal to their friends, lovers and compatriots. Even Nuri who’s been reduced to a homeless street person in the midst of terrorism is more humane than he has to be. I enjoy Ms. Snyder’s work immensely but this definitely isn’t light reading.
