Victoria Stark is known through out the Imperium as the Victorious Star. She tends to save her ships at all cost, even that of her captains. She also has never given “service” to any of her superiors. Both of these things has caused her to make a few enemies. Including that of her current captain. After she saves yet another ship after the captain and first officer have given up and abandoned ship, she is dumped on a little backwater planet full of mercenaries who wouldn’t think twice about offing an Imperial officer.

Which is almost what happens. As it is she is kidnapped by a man who just won’t take “no” for an answer. In more ways than one. Captain Ravnos needs a nav pilot and Victoria is it. But he expects to be “serviced” in any way he sees fit. He and his first officer, Seht. Victoria is appalled, at least she keeps telling herself that. But she soon discovers a side of her she had never realized existed.

Once the boundaries, such as they are, are set, Ravnos lets her in on their mission. He is being sent to collect the sentients of a ship called the Arcane. A ship rumored to have gone mad and murdered his crew. Unfortunately, they can’t just go in and take it and the plan to get aboard will change Victoria forever. Even more so than anyone planed.

I’ve never read such an intense book! From start to finish, this book had me glued to my PDA. The characters evolved more than I though possible and then you realize they didn’t really change so much as their true colors just came through. The universe was very well developed, as was the language. I only wish I could have come up with it. Reader beware . . . this book is not for the faint of heart. The sex is explicit, violent and sizzling. Some things will make you uncomfortable, but in the end you’ll understand. There is most definitely a method to the madness. I highly recommend this book. It’s definitely going on my “keeper” shelf.
