National Guard Sergeant Ivy Newland is on tour of duty in Iraq, currently guarding the remains of a sniper-ridden downtown mosque bombed by the American Air Force. Life in the war-torn country is difficult and painful enough without the addition of a very cold American civilian who insists on searching the mosque’s rubble, without the soldiers and with insufficient security clearance. When one of the civilians is injured by a sniper, Ivy again tries to take charge of the situation. There’s something suspicious anyway about civilians who insist on calling themselves Smith and Jones and exploring bombed ruins under sniper fire without U.S. soldiers supervising.

Until Smith began revealing a little of his tale, Ivy thought her only problems were snipers, protecting her men, and sending the injured Jones to safety via Medevac. But when Smith announces that the entire foundation of civilization is dependent on whatever is buried beneath that mosque, whether that be weapon or artifact, Ivy’s head begins to spin. Clearly there is much more depth to this situation than is already part of a very complex war zone.

This reviewer was reminded of the fast-paced narratives of Dan Brown and Robert Ludlum. Although normally I avoid reading any war-related stories, this one captured my attention from the very beginning, and the addition of the religious and mystical elements to the already exciting tale just made it more imperative for me to see it through to the end! This is a suspenseful tale that I recommend to any reader. The story will pass so quickly you will hardly realize you’ve actually reached the end! I anticipate more from the very talented Rob Preece.
