| Detective Joe Riso has been lost in booze and self reproach since his wife and daughter were killed in gunfire meant for him. Now her sister Marcy is coming to him for help? He can barely help himself. The two have hardly spoken since Emily and Amber died. The one thing they have in common is that they both blame him for their deaths. Now Marcy's drug trafficking husband is trying to track her down because she witnessed a murder. What's left of Joe's self respect kicks in to help her escape. But can he escape from the booze when feelings develop between them?
Melanie Atkins pens another nail biter in this series about the police in New Orleans post Katrina. Frank Moretti is as despicable as any man could be in his personification as the villain. It's hard to believe he was ever the kind of guy someone as cool as Marcy would fall in love with. Young Ryan, their son, is a typical child who seems to take life with a grain of salt as long as he has cartoons and video games. None of them can fool him for long though. He sees through Joe and Marcy as well as his father. Fellow officers on the force are great, at least the ones who aren't in cahoots with Frank. It's also fun to revisit characters we got to know in the first books of this set. This one has all the ingredients that make a suspense worth reading. Plus it has that extra dash of romance and some flashes of humor to make it more fun. Atkins has an excellent series going. Am looking forward to the next installment.
