Trick to Treat

Sarah Bradley is rich, in style, smart but doesn’t seem to fit in with anyone in school. She’d like to be friends with the popular kids. Finally she gets her chance on a Halloween scavenger hunt when she’s invited by Cindy one of the more friendly of the ‘in crowd.’ When the girls seem to lock her into the house their trick seems to turn into a treat for her when she finishes the hunt with Matthew Tyler.

Kimberlee Mendoza writes a great story for young people. Popular doesn’t necessarily mean nice as Sarah finds out for herself. Ms. Mendoza gives her more guts than many might have as Sarah stands up to them. Matthew was also following the crowd but shows some spunk when he pursues Sarah after the fiasco when she found out he kissed her to win a date.

It’s nice to see a fun story that reinforces a spirit of standing up for yourself for young people. There are a lot of us adults who could probably use the same kind of injection of belief in our own values. It’s often too easy for any of us to give in to peer pressure as the author shows. But for Sarah and Matt, giving in and going along may have prevented the friendship they found. This is a fun book for any age.
