Alicia Martin is from London and thinks she is plain and ordinary. She comes from a working-class family struggling to make a good life. One thing she isnąt, is a quitter. After meeting Arthur Bell, he makes her feel rich. He is all she has ever wanted. When he signs up for war, she is devastated. She doesnąt wish to wait until he returns to marry but her father is against the idea. One night alone brings on a passion neither can deny. Then Alicia is with child as Arthur is off to war, promising to return. Unfortunately tragedy strikes and Alicia is left alone to raise a son. She forces herself to continue on with life. In time she finds solace with Mathew Reede, who works for the Gas Company. Mathew is intrigued with Alicia. When she is confronted by a near fatal attack it pulls her closer to Mathew. When Mathew asks her to become his wife, Alicia is left with a choice that tears into her heart, as thoughts of Arthur still trouble her mind. She will agree if he will consent to a marriage without any pleasure but can Mathew agree to her terms?

Every book I pick up by Tricia McGill I fall in love with and this one is no exception. She has a way of spinning characters that embed into the heart of the reader and never let go. Her research is top-notch in all her stories. I adored Alicia, Mathew and all their brood of children. I love the fact Alicia is a good example to her family and her children follow in her footsteps. Each character in Traces of Dreams is so well portrayed that the story seems completely genuine. The background and the emotions of the players are so well-written, this reader felt as if they had stepped into the pages. This poignant tale is a winner that comes highly recommended by this reader.
