Brenna McCabe moved west and now runs a hotel in Jubilation, Kansas. She has a past she's ashamed of and far too many secrets. When she falls in love with the persistent Sheriff Micah Trent, a former Pinkerton agent experienced in digging up things people want hidden, she knows it's time to break off with him and move on. She has worked hard and wants nothing more than a secure life where she can send for, and provide for, her brother and sister. But she can't let her past hurt Micah or make him hate her. When her past catches up with her, and leaves her open to blackmail, she has to face the pain of leaving the man she loves.

This old west tale has tender moments as well as a serious mystery about who is blackmailing Brenna and why. Her character is strong enough to put together a new life yet vulnerable and lonely enough to want Micah's love, even if she feels she doesn't deserve it. I felt like I didn't get to know Micah as well as Brenna but he's a strong, take charge character, willing to fight her dragons, if need be. Handsome, forgiving, and protective is a definite plus.

The story was fast-paced and very interesting. I liked the mystery and the unexpected clues. The secondary characters, Brenna's brother and sister, and Micah's brother, Jeb, and sister, Susanne, really add to the flavor of the story. Like Micah, Jeb was a Pinkerton agent and Susanne still is. They will be valuable additions to solving the mysteries. This novella is a nice read for Christmas. Enjoy.
