This beautiful story was about a young, female medical doctor who was trying to find her way out of America and the gossip she encountered when scandal reared its ugly head…she was pregnant with a married man’s child and he would not leave his wife to marry her. The talk of the town escaladed until the source of most of the rumors (her mother) refused to allow her to leave the house because the townspeople were chitchatting about her horrendous adventures. Dr. Helen Stanwood left San Francisco to travel to Port Hedland, Australia to work with an older doctor—Dr. Richard Mallory—a friend of her father’s.

Shortly after arriving in Port Hedland, Helen faced the town’s residents as well as their sharp criticism of her short hair, her clothing choices, and her occupation. Helen knew it would be much worse if they found out about her past or that, at four months into her pregnancy, during her voyage from San Francisco, she miscarried her baby. She was determined to help the people but refrain from any personal life—that lasted until she met Paul Campbell, a gorgeous man who drove a 1924 Rugby convertible and was known as The Flyer for his trips into the outback and into the areas frequented by the aboriginals, the black tribesmen who lived there.

Ms. Marjorie Jones has a unique writing style which delved into the history of the Australia aboriginals as well as the personalities of the tribesmen and the white people of Port Hedland. Paul’s characteristics were bold and friendly, but until he met Helen, he had no inclination of settling down. Helen, after her shunning in California, had no intention of allowing anyone to get too close to her. Their traits were so loveable and so perfect for each other that I felt as if I was part of the basic group.

I really enjoyed the differences in this story; the plot was new to me, fast-moving and very interesting. The ending was definitely not cookie-cutter! The surprise finale was enough to make me love the story even more! Kudos, Ms. Jones.
