| When Noah Francis quit his lucrative job in politics to become an animal rights activist, his wife divorced him and his daughter, Krissy, barely talks to him. He is in the middle of planning a Washington style fund raiser, when his ex drops off Krissy at his office for an unexpected visit on her way out of town. A woman he hasn’t spoken to in years, calls from a place he hadn’t thought of in years and suddenly Noah and Krissy are on a fly-by-night trip to Bennett, Texas to save Uncle Lyn, the man who raised him, from making a million dollar mistake. Noah has to face the biggest mistake he’s ever made, Lou Ann Miles, the woman he left behind.
I wish there were space in the summary above to tell more about this book because it is truly exceptional. An original plot with twists a contortionist couldn’t manage makes this a delightfully fun read while the mysteries just add spice to already exciting fare. It is about young love sacrificed because of treachery and age old secrets revealed. It is about a guardian’s love for the boy he raised and the shiny life that becomes tarnished by politics as usual. It is about a sexual attraction so strong it wasn’t weakened by distance or time and a love so pure it sacrificed everything for the sake of another. The hero and heroine are loveable; they make you want to root for them. The secondary characters like Krissy, Lou Ann’s deputy Ben, Lou Ann’s younger sister Leslie and their karaoke singing mother Lila who is secretly having an affair with Noah’s Uncle Lyn, an avid animal lover who wears a parrot on his head and offers a million dollar reward for the return of Wilma his pregnant wallaby, round out the cast of zany but lovable characters who inhabit Bennett, Texas and Noah’s heart. This one’s a keeper.
