| Eliza Jane Carter was a one-woman revolution for women’s rights! She and her chaperone, Edgar Whittemore, stepped off the stage in Gardiner, Texas, with plans to stay for a few days and then travel on. Eliza Jane had a way about her that either endeared, or repulsed, her to people. She believed that women should be able to vote, have personal rights to accept or reject relations with their husbands, chose whether to have children, and be responsible for their own money.
About money…that was a stickler for her! Her husband had divorced her because she could not have children and left her with nothing; her money came from her inheritance from her grandmother. That was under the control of a man and he demanded that Eliza Jane be chaperoned and get her money through another man! She managed to get the townspeople stirred up and determined to see that women who needed her expertise would get it. Then she met the town doctor, Will Martinson, who was best friends with the sheriff, Adam Caldwell. It didn’t take long before the chemistry between Will and Eliza Jane over-shadowed any difficulties her extreme beliefs caused! Then, after the town was aware of her ability to “stir the women into action,” Mr. Whittemore left town with all her money which left her stranded with no money and no one willing to give her a job! The diverse population of Gardiner, Texas, played a large part in this interesting and well-written story. The characters were from one extreme to the other; they either felt sorry for Eliza Jane, supported her right to say what she thought, or they hated everything she stood for and just wanted her to leave. Ms. Shannon Stacy has done an excellent job writing this masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will look for other works by her in the future. I highly recommend this great historical to anyone who likes a myriad of characters doing so much that the script never got dull!
