Cassie Gambol, formerly Carly Sunderland is a survivor. Once she was a talented vascular surgeon, but her brutal ex-husband beat her so badly that he left her in a coma and unable to use her right hand. After months of therapy, both physical and psychiatric, she will never be a surgeon again, but has discovered a talent for making jewelry. A victims’ program has enabled her to change her name and she decides to move across country to the town of Petal. Her first day doesn’t start out well when she is broadsided by a prominent local Polly Chase. At the scene is her extremely large and take charge son, Shane, the local Sheriff. Cassie is both intimidated and attracted, and Shane is immediately fascinated by Cassie, who has to be the most beautiful and nervous woman he has ever met. He carefully courts her and makes headway despite some ups and downs. Things are never easy for Cassie, because her ex soon locates her and starts with threatening phone calls possibly progressing to the murder he never quite accomplished.

I really enjoyed my second trip to Petal. The inhabitants are friendly and quirky and the Chase brothers are definitely worth revisiting. Cassie is an incredibly vivid character and the reader will be able to see her progress both mentally and in her romantic life with Shane. I like the way she refuses to let anyone boss her around and the way she stands up to the very intimidating Shane. Shane has his own issues with trust, but he makes a big effort with Cassie, he becomes a much better person than in the last book. Polly is as colorful as ever and the suspense over whether the ex husband will finally find Cassie will keep the reader at the edge of her seat. I can’t wait for the next one!
