| Mona Murphy could hardy wait to escape little Copper Springs where nothing much ever happened. She left for college and returned after five years after the death of her grandfather, Jerome Kincaid. Almost everyone loved Jerome. But Mona blamed him for the family curse of being able to hear and sense too much.
Preston Hitchcock is investigating Jerome's "accidental" demise. Grandpa had just purchased a large insurance policy, payable to Mona. The two discover bloody towels, indicating that a fall down the stairs was not the cause of death. This is a nifty little puzzle with a shocker of a solution. Mona is wooed by her old boyfriend, now a married man with some deep secrets. There's a mentally challenged 16-year-old, neighborhood kids who refuse to leave, strange experiments on mice, and more criminal activity than any small town would support.
