The prison of Cardrak, at the far-flung reaches of a far galaxy, is the final stop for any inmates unfortunate enough to be assigned there. The only escape is eventual death. The female prisoner nine four eight is calm most of the time, but any sign of guard brutality incites her rage, and revolt erupts among the prison populace. Prisoner nine four eight is a Reeka, a race of warrior women who had been pardoned of their outlaw status and granted amnesty: all except for this one, Liane, only a child when captured. Liane was seven when captured, accused of murder but never tried. She was committed to Cardrak prison at nine.

When a bounty hunter discovers her existence, the other Reeka are notified and they and their Daamen trader mates determine to rescue her. Meanwhile, solitary confinement in the darkness has driven Liane into another catatonic period. A Daamen ship is assigned to head for Cardrak prison with a release order for Liane, and although all the crew are determined to save her, one among them is more intent than most. Borga finds something in Liane's photo that calls to him in a way that is both fey and undeniable, perhaps even a hint of destiny.

Soul of the Forgotten is a fascinating and richly-written tale with fine world-building brought to life by descriptive settings. Angela Verdenius demonstrates a fine gift for world-building and brings these races and their backgrounds to vibrant life. The character studies are excellent, and extend to secondary characters as well as the main protagonists. Liane's continuum from apparent sanity into madness and return is realistic and believable. Borga is a compassionate and devoted hero, who makes a fine companion for Liane. The reader will find immediate empathy for the characters and follow them through this page-turner with determination.
