| Julian of Wimbourne Minster is an aged medieval alchemist. His chatelaine, or housemistress, is Mistress Phillipa of Wareham. Phillipa capably runs Julian’s household as housekeeper and also occasionally tends to his few remaining sexual needs. It is not that his needs are infrequent, but that his ability has faded. Julian is certain that, as a lowly female, she can’t possibly understand his driving craving to locate The Philosopher’s Stone. The Stone supposedly will transmute base lead into gold, thus perfecting the world and bringing the chosen successful alchemist health along with eternal salvation. In the back of Julian’s mind must also be the notion that along with health in general, the Stone would manage to rejuvenate that very cherished, and very disabled, organ with whose restoration he could finally begin to frolic with Mistress Phillippa.
An accidental nudge of his concocted formula while he is lost in thought leads to an incredible discovery. Whether or not he has actually discovered the nature of The Philosopher’s Stone, he certainly has found the elixir of the Fountain of Youth. His strength and health have both returned to him in spades, and he realizes immediately that his sexual dysfunction has healed as well! To all intents and purposes, though he carries the same mind and knowledge, he is otherwise totally a new man. Alchemist’s Potion is an intriguing tale which explores the medieval world, the nature of alchemy, and the deepest layers of interaction between humans. I think every reader will be enraptured with the story immediately, as was I, and so impressed with the author, Bonnie Hamre, as to seek out her other books!
