| Faith McKenzie has been hiding for two years. Two others were killed, and she has moved five times, changing her name, to avoid the same fate. She’s just rented a house in Hope Island, Maine, but the terrifying phone calls haven’t stopped. Even more terrifying is the fact that she apparently has Retrograde Amnesia -- she really doesn’t know anything about herself. The only information she has comes from a relative of the murder victims. She regards Ben Jennings as her only friend.
Neighbor JT Wyatt senses Faith’s terror and is also attracted to her. His sister Liz lives on Hope Island, too. And Liz is hoping to get brother JT to move past the guilt he feels over the death of his wife Emily five years earlier. Soon Faith is working for JT at his security office. He used to be a cop, and he uses his connections to try to track down the truth about Faith. Author Eason reveals the details gradually as the physical attraction grows for her main characters. Both are consumed by guilt. The police in Austin thought Faith might have actually been a participant in the crime, and Faith fears this could be true. Her amnesia puzzles everyone. It must be truly disturbing to live with so little sense of self. The explanation is satisfying and the solution logical, if not totally believable. The physical romance is on the sweet side, both believable and and tender. These are likable characters solving a truly puzzling riddle. JT’s sister and coworkers are also pleasant. I was left with a few questions, Is Hope Island really an island? There’s a lot of water, but no bridge or ferry was mentioned. And why did the Austin police do such a poor job right after the crime? But, all in all, this was an enjoyable read.
