Charlie is a number one crack sharpshooter for the twenty- fifth Virginia infantry. To follow Joshua into the army had been the plan not being able to stand being left behind. Unfortunately Joshua falls early in battle killed by an enemy bullet. Now Charlie fights in memory of Joshua and for the friends that continue to fight while all along praying that the end of the war is near.

Charlie is drawn to the company’s doctor, Daniel Reid. Daniel and Charlie share an attraction. A time will come when Charlie is able to leave the army behind and return home. Daniel and Charlie find themselves brought together again as Charlie works to help escaped slaves and Daniel works to save as many lives as possible. Through it all their love only grows stronger.

Secrets and Sacrifices is a story of love during one of the bloodiest times in American History. Compelling characters bring the horror and heart break of the Civil War to life for the readers. Told from a southern point of view the story tells of the desperation of the soldiers as they are faced with sickness, starvation and even frostbite. When all around their friends and family were dying a few loyal men continue to fight even after they know all is lost.

Readers will be fascinated by the strength that is demonstrated by the character of Charlie. Charlie fights to do the right thing and protect love ones. When Joshua dies the sadness threatens to overwhelm Charlie. When Charlie finds a reason to go on readers will cheer the effort it takes. Each emotion demonstrated is effective and conveyed strongly to the readers.

The romance between Charlie and Daniel is difficult. Beyond the time it takes place and circumstances there is also the guilt. Charlie is still grieving the loss of Joshua and feels guilty for the attraction felt for the handsome doctor. Daniel has a fiancé and although he never feels for her what he feels for Charlie he must try to remember his betrothal. Charlie and Daniel turn to each other in passion and desire. Their love withstands all obstacles and touches the heart of the reader. This is a beautiful love story that takes place during such an ugly time in history.

Secrets and Sacrifices by Diane Wylie is a creative and wonderfully accurate depiction of the Civil War. Readers will find themselves drawn into the story from the very beginning. This is a story readers will remember and return to read again. I highly recommend it to the readers that enjoy historical romance.
