Carrie Marks just exists in life, going to a job she doesn’t particularly like, returning home at night to eat a TV dinner, watch some TV or read, and then go to bed. But in her dreams she imagines heroes, adventure, and fantasy. Then Carrie’s life is shattered. She is fired from her job, discovers that her identity has been stolen, her bank account has been wiped out, her credit is in shambles and someone is even spreading rumors that she has embezzled from the company she just left. Where is a hero when you need one? Out of nowhere gorgeous, successful, Nick Casey steps out of the rain and saves Carrie from an accident, offers her a job, and a place to escape to but surely he is too good to be true? There aren’t really men like this? There has to be a catch somewhere?

I enjoyed Safe Harbor! It is a sensual romance, an unusual mystery, and fairy tale all rolled up into one entertaining read. Carrie has hit bottom, everything bad that could happen to her seems to be happening to her and yet she spirited and independent. She is almost too independent. She stubbornly refuses several offers for help in solving her problems and refuses to talk about what is going on with the people who are her friends. She almost succeeds in driving them away but she is dealing with other people who are as stubborn as she is. Nick is especially stubborn but he knows something she doesn’t know. He cares for her very much and is determined to make everything alright. There were times I wanted to shake Carrie and tell her to wake up and realize she has found prince charming! If you believe in heroes in dreams why can’t there be heroes in real life? This is one of those books that you laugh and cry, feel frustrated and then joy, and become so involved with the story that the characters seem real to you! Oh and there are so many fun secondary characters and the town is so quirky that I truly hope there will be more stories about this little town and the people who live there.
