Liz is an archivist at a private library, overseeing a collection of valuable treasures ranging from the medieval to the Victorian. Only one night after her very public breakup with her live-in musician freeloader boyfriend, Liz is awakened from sleep in her new apartment by a quake, and races to the library to check on the status of the prized collections. She finds the room in near-ruin, with a hole in the back wall sporting an odd inscription, where apparently a book bearing the family surname of her best friend Tayna had been walled in, and mystery upon mystery suddenly begins to unfold.

The earthquake unveils parts of the University Library resembling eleventh century stonework of the British Isles, and throws the suspicious Kyre Osric, descendant of the philanthropist who gifted the family collection to the Library, into a tizzy. Meanwhile, best friend Tayna lives next door in the nearly abandoned family mansion which shares an iron fence, and quake damage, with the University Library. Tayna’s folks disappeared without notice ten years ago on a cruise around the world, just as Kyre’s parents had disappeared mysteriously during his college freshman term.

Otherness: Rift is a novel which captured my imagination from the first page and drew me into the story’s world, so that for the duration of the novel I found myself transported and forgetting I was simply reading, and not living along with the characters. As a lifelong reader, I realize how rare such an event is, and treasure each book in which this happens. Rina Slayter has quite a way with words and has composed an excellent beginning to a new fantasy series which will attract many readers who love mystery, suspense, fantasy, magic, and romance.
