| Cali Ross didn't like Kent Landon when she was eighteen. At thirty-eight her feelings hadn't changed much. Back then they had a connection of sorts. A temporary bond when she helped expose his father. Now twenty years later, she's back in Chicago and her work brings her face to face with Kent again. His ice cool façade is no longer just a front, it's embedded deep behind controlled indifference and arrogance. Cali never thought that she'd end up in Kent's bed and when it subsequently happens again months later, Cali is determined to break that control and see if the man who always intrigued her to some extent has any emotional depth whatsoever.
One of the things that I could really relate to in this novel is the age of the hero and heroine. The way they deal with day to day life has a maturity that comes with age and is realistic. The sex, on first glance, is without any emotional entanglements. Yet as their relationship develops, that slowly changes as the author gives us tiny glimpses that more is involved that just 'scratching an itch'. Again, the sex scenes are realistic. This is not your average romance. It's deep and meaningful and sometimes emotionally exhausting but I suspect that is just what the author wanted to achieve. Cali slowly breaks down the emotional blocks but never completely, she learns to interpret what Kent feels. I really enjoyed reading this book. It wasn't an easy book to read and definitely not light reading and makes a refreshing change. If you are looking for a story that has hidden depths, that develops slowly and intensely, then read this book.
