| Eadred is a thousand year old Viking warrior awakened in our time by a University archaeologist. The government and the University collaborate and call in Portland Ellis, an expert in ancient languages, to try to communicate with Eadred. Portland has no problem understanding Eadred and in fact she feels sympathy for his situation. They find they have an instant affinity. Despite the loss of his family and all the common things of his daily life, Eadred feels an undeniable attraction to Portland. And despite all the problems having a relationship with an ancient Viking man may cause, Portland knows the feeling is mutual.
Rediscovering Thor is a sweet romance with an interesting premise. I enjoyed the idea of an ancient warrior learning about our world and coming to terms with his losses and modern technology. Their relationship develops slowly in some respects but their instant chemistry builds and allows us to see their personalities. There is a lot of anticipation leading up to when they finally act on their sensual attraction. They are quickly in closer proximity when Portland’s house becomes their safe haven. The government agents and university professors are secondary characters who help move the plot along but definitely do not overshadow the main couple. Despite the interesting premise and lead characters, it just didn’t capture my imagination the way I hoped it would. The pace was a bit slow but parts picked up. A lot happened, including time passing, but many points were not fully explored. This left an impression that the story was incomplete, and could have explored the various situations in more detail and allow Eadred and Portland to become more engaging. Rediscovering Thor is a good little story that might have been a great longer novel. Some of the situations seemed contrived and others over the top, but there was enough to this story to keep me entertained.
