Attorney Julia Branholt doesn't want to defend pirate Hakon "Hawk" Thoralssen, but she has no choice but to take the pro-bono case. Hawk is stubborn and even though he did commit piracy, he expects her to get him out of it with a not guilty verdict. His reason for the piracy: destruction of a Tierra Bonita, his late wife's beautiful village. While Julia investigates possibilities for his defense, someone bails him out in her name, a cause for disbarment, and Hawk goes to save the village. Julia, determined, hot-tempered, and faced with breaking a promise to her late father, follows Hawk to Tierra Bonita. With further problems and an attack on Julia's life, she and Hawk realize they must work together to save the village. Will they be able to accomplish this and open their hearts to each other?

I read this wonderful book in one sitting. This well-written, character-driven novel is both suspenseful and poignant. The characters are absolutely wonderful. The fiery exchanges between Hawk and Julia are exciting, sometimes frustrating when it causes them to split, but satisfying at the same time. The author does a good job of describing the village of Tierra Bonita, as well as the other locations in the book. The author has done an excellent job of presenting both characters with problems that could well keep them apart forever. The additional characters include the federal agent who quits and then joins the team reconstructing Tierra Bonita, Hawk's father, whom we love to hate, and his mysterious assistant. The story comes to a rip-roaring conclusion and we learn who caused the destruction of the village. But will he get his just desserts, and will Hawk and Julia accept their love for each other?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and plan on reading others by this author, including the first one in the series. Well done, Laurie.
