When her parents are killed in a car accident evil step uncle Martin Blair tells Luz Montalvo the family has to be split up. . Taking what few possessions she can she manages to run as far as Denver with her two young siblings and get a job as an apartment manager. Charles Larimore is burned out of his apartment building by a man intent on revenge. Settling into the Draper Arms he runs right into Luz, a woman who throws a monkey wrench into his life. But before they can have a future both must deal with the burdens of the past.

Ann Warner again builds a tale full of characters who seem to come to life on the pages. They're all so realistic that we can't help relating to their pains and frustrations. Luz is an admirable woman who takes on life's challenges without complaint. Charles is a bear in the courtroom but his personal life seems to always hit a brick wall. Left on their own the two would probably never get beyond the feelings their fears won't let them express. Luckily they have friends in the forms of Alan, Kathy, Cora and others who help them over some of the hurdles. The two little ones, Marisol and Carlito, manage to wrap Charles, who doesn't think he like kids, right around their fingers.

This is one of those sequels that manages to wrap up the relationship from the first one by interweaving it throughout the story of Luz and Charles. Excellent characters and dialogue help drive the romance and the suspense. This is a story the reader may feel themselves wanting to be a part of. It's great reading.
