| We are in the year 1897. Abigail Du Pre had always known that her father was a cold, unresponsive man, but that he would stoop so low as to even out his gambling debts by giving his only daughter away, and to a stranger, is the ultimate degradation. Dr. Lucien Trier, her new owner, had first been against the proposal issued by her father, the Colonel, to utilize Abigail as a manager to run his household, until the suggestion turned to the possibility of using Abigail in other ways, and that thought perked up his interest. With this suggestion re-enforced at his first sight of her, he is pleasantly surprised to see that she is truly a beautiful woman with, he is sure, a wealth of unexplored passion seething just below the surface. His budding desire then is to show Abigail that she has far more potential than she knows she is capable of, and his greatest wish is to give her this experience.
Abigail feels uncertainty, hopelessness, and shame and they are well felt also by the reader. She had given up the last few years in her loneliness on her fathers estate in even the expectation of having a husband and family. She had carried over the cold environment in her family home, in subduing her hidden feelings in wanting to be loved, and loving, and the subconscious urge below the surface to explore her sexual, though yet untouched, nature. Two very unfulfilled people are brought together by a strange turn of fate, unknowingly thrown together by the father, never realizing that he is actually giving them something very special. I have to confess that I normally read very few true BDSM stories (light bondage I have nothing against), and I chose this one out of curiosity. I must admit that my dislike for the dominant/submissive side of this genre still doesn't prevent me from seeing that it is a beautifully written story, full of passion in the characters need for one another. The emotional evolution each are going through, learning about themselves, and the changes in each brought on by the experiences they go though; how they begin to change in their feelings for each other. We get a vivid feel for the confusion Abigail is dealing with. Can she label herself for enjoying something different from the normal sexual activities that nice ladies wouldnt be involved with. To sum this up, I would definitely recommend this book. The emotion the characters feel for each other is massive, even to my lack of understanding in the needs and desires of true BDSM. The environment is well described, the need for love comes though beautifully, and the passionate sex between Abigail and Lucien is really very explosive.
