| Deanna Oscar and her house full of ghosts and haunted things are again in the thick of things in New Orleans. Katrina has passed, but her family comes to visit, creating their own tropical storms. Mom and Dad want her to move back to Chicago, where they think it's safe. But Deanna loves the Big Easy and the sense of belonging she finds there. She can go to The Other Side to visit dead folks and she's learning to teleport. If only her family would let her be.
Pesky reporter Lara Gordon tries to arrange a battle of the psychics with Muriel Jennings, a publicity hound who runs a cult-like group where snakes provide the true test of faith. Muriel has some telekinetic powers, but Deanna is sure she's a fake. And she's more than a little annoyed when Muriel horns in on the murder investigation of Nemo Mandes at De's favorite drag club. Muriel's pregnant daughter Joan and seemingly mouse-like sister Agnes contribute to the plot. And two of De's closest friends complicate their lives and hers with an affair. The characters are all delightful, as real as they can be in this supernatural setting. The ghosts all have distinct personaliities and Drag Queen Ivy is fascinating. There's no real love life for De, though there are some interesting men. Deanna finds some new traits in her parents in this stand alone volume of a delightful series. The characters are evolving nicely and the humor remains fresh. Deanna's connections with the drag club and the local chapter of the Lotus Circle promise many more funny and satisfying installments. Hooray!
