Carolyn (Caro) Torrington, oldest daughter of the deceased vicar, has three younger sisters. She'd been friends with Lucas Rivers, Viscount Foxhaven, for years. When Lucas found out Caro was working for a neighbor, he rode his horse, Maestro, into the house, grabbed her and took her upstairs. They were still on horseback. He refused to allow her to leave until she agreed to marry him.

They agreed to marry, in name only, to assure that his father would release his monies to him. He would also take care of Caro and her sisters in the future. Lucas’s cousin, Cedric Rivers, worked to turn his uncle against Lucas so that he would inherit. It seemed to be working quite well. Father and son had little contact and, when they did, it wasn't good.

There were quite a few other characters that filled out this book. I have to say, though, that I had a bit of trouble keeping them all separated in my mind. For instance, there was Chevalier Francois Valeron, who was Caro’s cousin on her mother’s side. There was also Charlie Bascombe, one of Lucas’s best friends. Each of these characters had distinct positions and most of them were against Caro and Lucas as a viable couple. However, as each interaction and suspenseful action occurred, they were all involved and it got confusing trying to keep them apart. I’ll admit, though, that by the end of this book, I absolutely had no trouble distinguishing them.

This was a beautiful love story even though it was difficult at times for me to follow. It was so easy to want the couple to find true love and get away from all their problems. Overall this manuscript was good. The plot was complicated but it had a great surprise near the end.

I recommend this book if you enjoy a beautiful story with a lot of conflict involved. It delivered a look at family obligations and how lives can get involved. It showed how, with enough desire, it's possible to see true love survive.
