Isabelle Carson is one of twelve foster kids who were in a home run by a vicious child molester. When she gets Christmas cards back from two of those she kept in touch with over the years she's curious enough to try to find them. Both have died recently from apparent suicide. Next she finds her friend Beverly who has a new baby and everything to live for dead. Three people are too much more than coincidence. Grant Kent hasn't seen Isabelle for fourteen years. When she calls he can't stay away. The two become enmeshed in a desperate attempt to find a killer before it's too late.

Shannon K. Butcher excels at crafting a suspense story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. She gives us a wealth of exceptional characters who have fought through child abuse and rejection to make something of their lives. Two despicable villains seem determined to be hateful and vicious while calling it parenthood or love.

Throughout all the bad things being done by sick individuals Ms. Butcher weaves a love story between two people afraid to be hurt. Isabelle and Grant build a struggling romance, trying so hard to be honorable that they may lose one another. She gives us the courage of Dale struggling to be a teenager with his first love, college prep, and a father determined to take him away from Isabelle at any cost.

The many well crafted characters in this book show the kind of struggles people live through every day without turning to violence. The contrast between their thoughts, actions, and dialogue and that of the two who make their lives hell is easy to see. This is one of those books that I pulled me in on page one and wouldn't let me put it down.
