Dinah Greene grew up with a stepmother and two younger stepbrothers, none of whom were any better than they should be, nor at all devoted to her well-being. At the demise of her father, her stepmother and brothers decided any and all inheritance should be theirs, despite Dinah’s demurrals. Then Stepmother pushed Dinah into an unhappy marriage with a man she realized she didn’t love, simply because the guy appeared to represent financial and pragmatic security.

He also turned out to be physically abusive, alcoholic, and an adulterer; and when he died in a multiple interstate pile-up, Dinah didn’t grieve. Instead, she sold her house furnished, cashed in the life insurance payout, and followed a childhood dream: she moved to Arizona, to discover the desert, and to find peace in the vortices so prized by Native Americans.

In the process of her self-discovery, Dinah also found love-in the form of Navajo painter Jim, a man whose devotion to his art comes to be equaled by his devotion to Caucasian Dinah. Dinah is a soul whose compassion and devotion know no bounds, and she is a giver, not a taker. So is Jim, and they are uniquely suited to each other in a way that can only inspire each reader to relearn hope for her own life.

Navajo Dreams is the kind of romantic novel that inspires readers to believe in a happy ending; indeed, in a happy middle and a happy beginning! The heroine, Dinah Greene, has survived an unhappy life, as so many do, but in her case, the shining innocence of her spirit and brightness of her character have never tarnished. Dinah Greene deserves a knight in shining armor, and does she ever find him! Author Kate Hofman pens a story which has quickly earned its way to my Keeper Shelf. With a lovely heroine and a gorgeous hero, the story surpasses the usual run-of-the-mill romance genre because the author interweaves spirituality and soul, innocence and romance, love and compassion. This is nearly a perfect story, and one I expect to read and reread again.
