Beth Williamson has, once again, brought her expertise to the forefront with the first in a new series, Devils on Horseback: Nate. Ms. Williamson does western historicals like few others; stories come alive under her pen (computer keys). Luckily we can look forward to, at least, four more in this series. They will have to surpass even her high standards to equal this book.

Nate was the only one of the five devils who was not a Blackwood (brother or cousin). These five had been friends for years; they fought together during the war, returned to their burned-out hometown of Briar Creek, Georgia, and decided they would head west and try to survive by starting a business which they called DH Enterprises, Devils on Horseback, which was their nickname during the war. By the time they got to Grayton, they were almost starved. Nate, the diplomat, was sent to town to try to find work.

Nate introduced himself to Samuel O’Shea, a wealthy man who “ran” the town; he gave him permission to put an advertisement in the general store; he later hired them to do a job for him. Nate also made the acquaintance of Miss Elisa Taggert, whose grandfather was Mr. Grayton, the town’s namesake. Of course, even the initial contact between the two created sparks which literally jumped from the page to grab my attention. This made it almost impossible to remove the Taggert’s from O’Shea’s land, which had been a long-standing feud between the families.

This story is about Nate; however, the individual characteristics of the other devils has become so compelling that it will be almost impossible to patiently wait for the other books. The way Ms. Williamson detailed Elisa’s father and younger brother enabled me to feel as if I was sitting in the middle of the controversy. The tension was almost overwhelming; the sexual activity was exactly what we have come to expect from this brilliant author.

The biggest obstacle I see with this book is waiting until September 25th to read it! Look forward to it; it’s magnificent!
