| Mike joined the Marines to gain that sense of belonging that he never had as the child of a single mother. During his time in the Marines he learns a lot of life lessons, the most important of all being that he is gay and in love with his boot camp buddy, Scott. Both men realize that their love is deep and decide that they want to remain together and in the corp. After Scott dies in Mike’s arms it’s all Mike can do to continue on with his life, as a matter of fact the Corps is the only thing keeping him going, until he gets his own unit and falls under the command of Lt. Paul Richards. Paul makes Mike reevaluate his choices and what he wants to do with his life.
Mike is a dynamic and interesting character; he was forced to face the reality of his sexuality when he joined the corps and how he felt about his friend and partner. They are deeply in love with each other and their life in the corp. When the war in Afghanistan takes Scott from Mike it is all that Mike can do to continue living. After recovering from his injuries he wants back on the front, not only to take revenge but to end his own life and be with Scott. Then Paul enters the picture and he’s everything that Scott wasn’t, Paul is the one that takes the lead and forces Mike to face some difficult decisions and make the choice about whether he wants to end his life or build a new one with Paul. I enjoyed the dynamics of the relationships in this story and, as I’ve come to expect from Bobby Michaels, he doesn’t hesitate to portray the sometimes brutal truths that we face in life. A dynamic and engaging read from one of my favorite authors in the m/m genre, Bobby Michaels has written another winner!
