This is an unusual book. It is a historical romance, set in 1955, but it is so much more. This book is an in-depth reminder of the Civil Rights actions which still affect us today. This book dealt with conflicts such as cross burnings, neighbour fighting neighbour, and genuine fear of simply existing in the chaotic world. Lest you who read this review are hesitant, let me assure you. This author was able to wonderfully blend the horrific truth of the past with the beauty of a long-awaited love story.

Tyler Carson had loved Grant Madison forever, it seemed. Six years ago, in the midst of their relationship, Grant left her. He hadn’t returned even while his father lay dying. Now he was back with his ten-year-old niece, Amy. Her mother (Amy thought was dead) was in prison for killing Amy’s father. Grant had a lot to deal with. First problem was living in his father’s house meant living next door to Tyler.

I don’t know if Ms. Barri Bryan lived through the Civil Rights actions in the South. If she did her research instead of living it, she deserves credit for an amazing job. I lived through it myself, in the South. It was horrifying—not because it shouldn’t have been done, but because the outcome was so tough. She interwove this incredible romance throughout the telling of the horrors that started in the mid-fifties.

These two main characters were still in love with each other. However, they didn’t think it was reciprocated. They were mixed up with both love interests and social problems. The secondary characters were so vital. It was imperative to have them reacting in the storyline.

There were myriad complications which didn’t seem as if a happily-ever-after was even possible. There were so many people involved; it was hard to imagine a good outcome. Sensuality was obvious, but not over-the-top.

I recommend that you will enjoy this book. There are so many things going on, it was impossible not to like some part of it.
