Kevin Best and Angela Summerset were owners of Best Dishes, a new bakery/catering company in town. They were competition for Maggie Donnely and Armand and Lyla Hemingway were owned and worked the bakery/catering business known as Let’s Dish.” To say that the owners of these businesses had a background together would be an understatement. Kevin and Maggie were partners when they were in culinary school until Kevin informed Maggie that her husband was a drag queen. To make matters worse, Kevin kissed her that same day. Instead of thanking Kevin, Maggie chose to blame him for interfering with her marriage.

The tension between Kevin and Maggie was stressful. Maggie and her partner, Armand, were struggling financially before Kevin came into town and opened his store. Their only hope was winning a competition which had a prize of $100,000, later raised to $150,000. After Maggie’s kitchen burned she found out that Armand hadn’t taken the insurance check to the company. Sparks flew in all directions. The only recourse Maggie had was to borrow Kevin’s kitchen after business hours to recreate her menu for the competition. It didn’t help that she was pregnant with her ex’s baby.

Ms. Catherine Wade has done a good job of telling this story. She introduced us to the background by showing us Maggie’s diary. It was compelling to read the chaos that made Maggie the person she was. The characters were vibrant and believable. They were especially well used in the dialogue in telling this poignant story. Wade is a new author to me, but I enjoyed her methods of writing. She did a good job of telling this mixed up storyline and leaving the reader grasping for more details. The part of the story about her screwed up parents was something many of us can relate to.

I recommend this book as a great, clean read for everyone who likes a happily ever after but cannot imagine how it can happen. It’s a good book. This author bears following.
