| John 'Mac' MacDonald has been sent to Lakehaven, New York as an interim Police Chief while his shoulder heals and he tries to regain his memory. He and Hines, both Albany special forces officers were involved in an arrest that went bad. One officer was killed and Mac was badly wounded. Spending his days in a small town of less than five thousand seemed mundane until he meets Carolyn Blake and her daughter Terri. They're busy making new memories when the city crimes come knocking at their door.
Lois Carroll has crafted an excellent love story and suspense. She fills the tale with great characters and pulls us into their lives. Terri is a seven year old precocious matchmaker who hopes to help find herself a Dad. Hines is a great cop with a sense of humor that will leave you in stitches sometimes with the stunts he pulls on Mac. Neither Carolyn nor Mac believe the feelings they have for one another will ever see the future but that doesn't stop them from being drawn into a relationship they can't really stop. The villains are despicable and the reader doesn't have to think twice about whether or not they're bad to the bone. The author does a great job weaving in scenarios from every day life in a small town to make this novel realistic. That area west of Syracuse is one of my favorite parts of the state. The community and its inhabitants seem to come alive for me as I read. This is one of those tales that can keep you on the edge of your seat from suspense while enjoying the people and dialogue!
