| New York City in 1886 brought Kathryn Mitchell, an agent with The Burr Agency, and Pinkerton agent Jamie Donovan together again. It was not a fond meeting. Kathryn was an agent with The Burr Agency because the Pinkertons did not hire women. Her father had lost his life on a case with Mr. Burr so he felt obligated to allow her to work for him.
Kathryn’s present job was to return monies gotten from a botched bank robbery. She had to take the money to Overland Bank and locate a man involved with the latest robberies and the counterfeit operation. Pinkerton Jamie Donovan was following the same case. His interest in, and concern for, Katie led him to ask her to work together for their common cause. This book was a little hard for me to get into. It was, however, worth all the effort expended to find this beautiful story. I don’t know why it was so hard for me to get involved with the book, but it seemed as if I would never get all the characters and situations straightened out in my mind. I had a bit of difficulty separating the good from the bad and the locations and their importance. I want to hurriedly say that this was an unusually beautiful story. It is one of the best storylines I have ever read. After I got into the story, it became evident quickly how stunning this plot was and how involved I would become. It was certainly worth the effort of getting through the first few pages. Ms. Donna Dalton has a marvelous way with words and knows how to tell a story to captivate her audience. Jamie’s family members were well represented and, although he was adopted, his family’s involvement in his life was palpable. His friends were questionable and Katie did a great job of keeping him at arm’s length. Ms. Dalton’s descriptions of those entanglements were great. She did a great job with this book and ended it in a very upbeat, unexpected manner. I highly recommend that you read this book.
