The province of Niveka is a long-lost civilization resting beneath the Red Sea and under the shifting Egyptian sands. Khafeel, nearly immortal confidant to Niveka’s King Ziphir, and Caretaker of the Secrets, has been awakened at last to finally pass on the secrets to a mortal caretaker. The unwitting chosen recipient is flame-tressed Dr. Claire Linsey, Egyptologist. Interfering with Khafeel’s goal is Sahra, twin sister and royal wife of Ziphir in a political union. Sahra is a viper among women, a seducer and manipulator. Ziphir had only truly loved one of his lesser wives, Isadora, whose poisoning had ultimately resulted in the destruction of the kingdom of Niveka; and Ziphir and Isadora live on in eternity serving the will of the Sun-God, Ra. Khafeel, whose devotion remained strongly with his king, had never experienced the all-pervasive love of Ziphir for Isadora. Sahra has been reawakened by Bastet, the goddess whom she serves, but will also serve to interfere with Khafeel’s pursuit of his goals, as is her nature.

Adrianna Dane must surely have extensively researched her ancient time period, its politics and spirituality, and then applied her wide-ranging imagination. This is one of the best accountings of the period of Ancient Egypt that I have read, and using a mythical kingdom simply lends spice to the tale. Khafeel and Claire, Ziphir and Isadora and Sahra are all very well-realized characters; and the love expressed between two of the couples left this reviewer wishing such love and devotion could be found more often in life. I was also quite impressed with the devotion that the main characters of Niveka demonstrated toward the deities they served throughout mortal life and eternity. I highly recommend this short tale!
