| Rachel Connelly is living the life that everyone thinks she has always dreamed of. She is a singer with the Athens Opera, and has just landed her first leading role. It is a good life, but what she really wants is to be loved. Once she was in love with Ben Slater, her childhood friend, and thought that he loved her too. That is until he told her he wasn’t ready for a permanent relationship and sent her away. He replaced her pretty quickly, according to local gossip. So Rachel concentrated on her career and made a new life and new friends far from Nebraska. She can’t forget Ben, but she can’t let him hurt her again when he comes to Athens on business. With the help of her roommate Guy, she might just be able to keep her heart from breaking again.
Ms. Black has written a wonderful love story. Rachel is so sympathetic, overcoming her broken heart to become a success in her career. Her fears of abandonment, due to a father who has no time for her, are only reinforced by Ben and his sister Grace’s insensitive behavior, yet she still loves one and has feelings of friendship for the other. Ben has always loved Rachel and thought that he was giving her what she wanted, or so he says. He does realize his mistake but he really does not realize just how badly he hurt Rachel. Her roommate Guy knows her better than any of them and is a very good friend. The subplot of his romance with Patrick is a parallel to Rachel and Ben’s story. The love scenes are very well done and the background and backbiting of the colorful opera company is very vivid as are the descriptions of the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of Athens.
