Earth 2757: Val Cutter, vampire, has been framed and convicted of embezzling millions. Paul de l’Astre is an Apollan, native of the planet Apoll’ex, where the populace requires sunlight to survive. On Earth in the Vampires’ sector penal colony run by the vampire Retkove, who framed Val, Paul is dying from the lack of sunshine. Paul is the sole survivor of a five-person crew surveying the far-flung reaches of the solar system, destroyed by the vampire Retkove in an attack that violated all the concords of the major and minor planetary systems. Now Paul is unable to communicate with his home planet, confined to patrolling the beach, and hopes only to find an amenable Earthling who might possibly help him. When he meets one of the night guards, Paul is immediately drawn by both lust and a link of intuition, sensing this might be the one to help him.

The two enter immediately into intimacy, finding a peace and joy that transcends the mere physical satisfaction and forging a greater bond in which each determines to give all the aid and comfort possible to the other. Together they determine their common enemy, the evil, cunning, Retkove, and determine to defeat him and escape his clutches. Paul needs to return to his home planet, or die; although if Val converts him to vampirism, he could remain. There seems to be no other option available.

Val and Paul are so immediately right for each other that their love and attraction just shines from the pages. I found myself rooting for them from the beginning, desiring for them a happy-ever-after free from the constraints of Retkove’s slavery and medical machinations. This story is highly recommended and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in the Heliotropic Series.
