| Jenet is a beautiful young, golden, and blush-colored dragon that has been mourning the absence of her childhood companion and the one man she desires as her knight partner. Drake, the man who could potentially be her knight had left the land of Draconia fifteen years earlier under a self-imposed exile, with a vow never to return. Taken in by the Jinn, his musical gifts earned him the nickname ‘Drake of the Five Lands’ as a wandering minstrel. This gave him not only notoriety, but also a superb opportunity to discreetly gather information. All of his plans changed when he unearthed some information concerning the royal family during his daily work as a master spy and informant in protection of the homeland he’d abandoned. He learns of the enemy’s plan to kidnap one of the family’s younger princes and immediately returns home to warn his King. The resulting events change Drake’s life irrevocably as he gains insight into his future and discovers self-truths that have previously lain dormant.
Having read the first four books in the “Dragon Knights” series, I had very high hopes for this sequel. I must say, Ms. D’Arc certainly did NOT disappoint. Every bit as exciting and alluring as the first tales, FireDrake continues building on the story that began with Maiden Flight. Although I suppose this tale could be read as a stand-alone, I firmly believe that the reader would be doing him/herself a great disservice by not reading the entire series in sequence. The plot is extremely detailed and well planned – each scene and bit of information falling into place like a uniquely crafted puzzle. Characters that the reader was introduced to in the first books, reappear in supporting roles in FireDrake. Because one DOES have ample opportunity to get acquainted with each character, it is very easy to lose oneself in the storyline. The main characters’ strengths and weaknesses are portrayed in beautifully written and often very emotional scenes. Despite the somewhat unconventionality of the love scenes (due to the elements of fantasy involved), I found them to be very tastefully depicted and emotionally stimulating as well as arousing. Although some of the plot is easily surmised when the reader is introduced to certain elements of the storyline, this in no way detracts from the overall reading experience. I would HIGHLY recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a delightful foray into the realm of dragons, knights, and fantasy. It is by far one of the best series this reader has ever had the pleasure of reading.
