When M.E. Emma St. Clair is struck by a hit and run driver, she experiences a near death experience. She actually died but was sent back. She now sees the ghosts of her autopsy subjects as a side effect of the accident. Desperate to find the killer of his friend and unable to solve the murder of another friend and of his sister the year before, Jason MacKenzie is relentless in trying to get the details of the accident from her. Emma seems to know more about certain murders than she should, so now he is suspicious of her also, not that he needs any excuse to get close to the beautiful doctor. Emma tries to recover from her trauma, mourn the good friend who died in the accident, understand why she sees ghosts, and tries to figure out her attraction to the handsome detective with the womanizing reputation..

Emma certainly has a lot on her plate from the beginning of this story. She is recently divorced from a controlling man who cheated on her and lied to her. She is hit by a car and her heart stops twice. A good friend is killed in the same accident. After a long and painful recovery she returns to work to find that she has the added company of the spirits of the deceased while she is autopsying their bodies. She is attracted to the detective on the case, but his reputation is very like her ex’s. He says that he has changed and she wants to believe him, but her best friend and his former lover tell her otherwise. Jason is obsessed with his losses. Over the last three years, he lost his parents, his sister, and two of his best friends. He really has changed but circumstances keep giving Emma doubts. This part alone would make for a great story but the author adds an unlikely killer to the mix. I was on the edge of my seat for much of the story; Emma’s amateurish sleuthing leads her into all kinds of dangerous situations. The subplot of Layne, the ex lover, and her downward spiral definitely enhanced the story and added to the excitement of the final scenes.
