Aureliana is a personal attendant to the Empress of the Byzantine empire. Yngvarr is a Viking warrior, one of the Emperor's sworn protectors. The two are initially attracted when Yngvarr hears about her strength of will in destroying a man who attempted to rape her. They join forces to protect her daughter Galla from villains who would use her as a threat against Aureliana and gain power but end up with a powerful love.

Jennifer Mueller pens a great historical love story. The characters and olden times come alive as she tells the tale. Both Aureliana and Yngvarr have been uprooted from their homelands. He by choice, she unwillingly when her much older husband died. The plight of women throughout history comes across well as does the strength of this one woman to stand out from the crowd in looks and personality. There is some humorous word play as well as danger with intrigue to keep the story filled with action in and out of the boudoir. Ms. Mueller keeps this interesting from first page to last.
